FRANCA VIOLA

Alcamo, January 9, 1947

Franca is the first Italian woman to have refused the shotgun marriage. Daughter of peasants, she was kidnapped, beaten and raped at the age of seventeen by her boyfriend Filippo Melodia, grandson of a well-known mafioso from Alcamo. Faced with the proposal of a shotgun marriage which, as provided for by the law, exonerated the kidnapper who married his victim, the young woman is immovable. The trial, which began in December 1966, represents the possibility for a woman to challenge the archaic rules of a presumed and patriarchal "honor", and will lead to the elimination of shotgun marriage and honor killing from the Italian penal code in 1981. "I am not the property of anyone, no one can force me to love a person I do not respect, honor is lost by those who do certain things, not those who suffer them".
