The Parisian painter Georges Rouault (1871-1958) was one of the leading figures in the Fauves group in France during Expressionism.
In 1891 he entered the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris where he became the favorite pupil of Gustave Moreau. In 1898, after Moreau's death, he was appointed curator of the Moreau Museum in Paris.
At the École he met and became friends with Henri Matisse, Albert Marquet, Henri Manguin and Charles Camoin.
In 1910 Rouault held his first solo exhibition at the Druet gallery, where he presented a large number of paintings and ceramics, establishing himself as one of the precursors of expressionism.
From 1917 Rouault devoted his work to prints, searching for inspiration in religious subjects with a particular focus on the passion of Christ.
From 1930 onwards he began to exhibit abroad and his works were well received in London, New York and Chicago. In addition to painting, he continued to nurture a passion for engraving and worked on his most demanding graphic work, the Miserere cycle, published in 1948.
Rouault died in Paris on February 13, 1958.
