Born in Varese on 1 August 1999, Nicolò Martinenghi is an Italian swimmer, champion of Europe in the long and short course 100m breaststroke, in the long course 50m breaststroke and world champion in the long course 100m breaststroke. After representing Italy at the Tokyo 2021 Summer Olympic Games, winning a bronze medal, he won the gold medal in the 100 breaststroke and in the 4x100 mixed at the World Swimming Championships in Budapest 2022, setting the European record and took home the silver medalin the 50m breaststroke.

Nicolò donated this exclusive personal swimming kit to support the charity projects of 'Il Ponte del Sorriso Onlus', the local charity of the Ponte di Varese Hospital dedicated to supporting children, creating unique and innovative welcome programs in pediatric wards and organizing recreational and educational activities.

The Cause

Un bambino in ospedale non è un piccolo adulto, ma prima di tutto un bambino. E' su questa filosofia che si basa l'attività de Il Ponte del Sorriso, che si pone come obiettivo quello di aiutare il bambino ad affrontare la malattia, gestire la paura dell’ospedale e superare con serenità l'esperienza del ricovero, in modo che possa diventare persino un’occasione di crescita.

Il nome, Il Ponte del Sorriso, si riferisce metaforicamente al ponte che i bambini devono attraversare verso la guarigione, che unisce l’ingresso in ospedale e il ritorno a casa, un ponte dove colore fa rima con calore, dove giochi, sorrisi, narrazione e spazi vivaci sono la terapia non farmacologica, sono l’altra metà della cura.

Ogni giorno i volontari de Il Ponte del Sorriso, coordinati da educatrici professioniste, somministrano una medicina magica, la fantasia, che aiuta i bambini a guarire giocando, organizzano attività ludiche, garantiscono supporto alle famiglie e ospitalità a quelle più lontane alla Casa del Sorriso.

Sicuramente il progetto più importante è stato ottenere il polo materno infantile a Varese. Per fare ciò, sono state intraprese infinite lotte di sensibilizzazione politica e istituzionale, è stato sollecitato il territorio che ha prontamente risposto con grandi donazioni grazie alle quali Il Ponte del Sorriso ha potuto pagare tutta la progettazione e contribuire in modo concreto, con qualche milione di euro, alla sua evoluzione.
