Giorgio de Chirico was born in 1888 in Volos (Greece). From an early age he attended a drawing course at the Polytechnic School of Athens, then, from 1906 to 1908, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. From 1910, Nietzsche's readings prompted him to produce his first metaphysical self-portraits and landscapes.

From 1911 to 1915 he settled and worked in Paris, exhibiting in various annual exhibitions. At the end of the war, de Chirico went to Rome and took part in the "Plastic Values" exhibitions. His first solo show dates back to 1919. Between 1924 and 1929 the artist lived in Paris once more. In 1926 he bacame part of the Novecento movement, in clear opposition to modernism; he was criticized for this choice and many of his artistic relationships were interrupted.

De Chirico went on to explore the theme of doubles in his canvases in which he is portrayed alongside his mother, brother or mirrors. He also painted characters from Greek mythology, portraits and horses, as well as composing still lifes that he defined as "silent lives". He enjoyed experimenting with art, creating an aura of enigma that made him stand out from the others. Artists such as Ernst, Yves Tanguy, Dali and Magritte were all influenced by him.
He died in 1978 in Rome.
