Rare photo of the Oscar statuette hand signed by the great Italian actress Sophia Loren.

Considered one of the most famous Italian actresses in history, Loren was very young when she entered the world of cinema and made a name for herself early on in the fifties, thanks to her roles in comic films such as Scandal in Sorrento and in Hollywood-style films like Houseboat and It Started in Naples, for which she was nominated for the Golden Globe. She also demonstrated a great dramatic ability with her role in Black Orchid, which won her the Volpi Cup for best female performance.

She was directed by Vittorio De Sica in 1960 in Two Women, for which she won the Oscar, the first given to an actress in a foreign film. She was nominated again for the Oscar for Best Leading Actress in 1965 for the film Marriage Italian Style and in 1991 she was awarded an Oscar for her career. Other films that have made the history of Italian cinema are A Special Day and Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow.

Over the course of her career she was directed by Sidney Lumet, Charlie Chaplin, Martin Ritt, Carol Reed, George Cukor, Henry Hathaway, Robert Altman, Dino Risi, Mario Monicelli, Ettore Scola and Vittorio De Sica and starred alongside Marcello Mastroianni, Marlon Brando, Cary Grant, Clark Gable, Gregory Peck, William Holden, John Wayne, Paul Newman, Burt Lancaster, Richard Harris and Richard Burton.

The Cause

History Life Onlus was born out of a group of young volunteers’ passion for history and culture.

Our belief is that knowledge is the heritage of us all and that every one of us should know his/her own past in order to become a better version of himself/herself.

At the center of our activities are the protection, promotion and enhancement of culture and art in all of their forms and expressions. To this end, one of our main goals for 2017 is to create a fund for scholarships for deserving but economically disadvantaged students.

We believe that knowledge is a right of everyone: every citizen of the world should have the possibility to access it, independently from his/her economic situation, because only instruction makes men truly free.
