The Prize

"Faro Tramonto" by Virginia Vargas.

Oil on canvas
40 x 30 cm

The landscape has always been at the heart of artistic research, both as a setting, as a background, but also as a subject itself. The naturalistic description of the landscape has been one of the greatest aspirations for artists of all ages. Each historical period has given its own interpretation of the landscape, contributing to the evolution of its description: first with research on space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then on the atmosphere in the sixteenth century; up to the representation of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.

Vargas basically starts from a realist vocabulary, which looks to Edward Hopper and other American painters. However, Hopper's unfiltered, light-filled reality is completely reworked by Vargas, who fills it with experience and emotionally charged vibrations. In fact, on a formal level, while the drawing is extremely precise, almost hyper-realistic in capturing every single detail of the objects, on a pictorial level reality is represented with a pictorial outline with a strong structural value, which arranges the brush strokes plane on plane. In this way the surface of the painting becomes complex, suitable for grasping the complexity of the human gaze.

Virginia Vargas is an artist originally from Montevideo, where she was born in 1972. She moved to Italy as a child and trained in architecture, scenography and painting. She also made clothing for the family shop. As far as painting is concerned, Virginia Vargas boasts a career marked with prizes, awards and numerous personal and collective exhibitions.
