Francesco Messina dal 1922 inizia ad esporre regolarmente le sue opere alla Biennale di Venezia, vincendo nel 1942 il premio scultura. Tra il 1926 e il 1929 partecipa alle esposizioni del gruppo artistico Novecento Italiano a Milano.

Nel 1932 si trasferisce a Milano, dove ottiene, la cattedra di scultura all’Accademia di Brera di cui diviene, dopo solo due anni, il direttore. Negli anni trenta partecipa a molte importanti mostre internazionali: a Barcellona, Berlino, Berna, Goteborg, Monaco di Baviera, Oslo, Parigi, San Paolo del Brasile e Zurigo.

Nel 1978 partecipa a due grandi mostre in Unione Sovietica presso il Museo Puskin di Mosca e l’Ermitage di Leningrado. Nel 1979 la Pinacoteca di Stato di Monaco di Baviera organizza una grande esposizione di scultura e grafica. Tra le sue opere più significative ci sono: i Busti di Giacomo Puccini e di Pietro Mascagni per il Teatro alla Scala di Milano, il Monumento a Pio XI nel Duomo di Milano, il Monumento a Pio XII nella Basilica di San Pietro a Roma e il Cavallo Morente al Palazzo RAI di Roma.
