Renato Guttuso was an Italian painter and politician, improperly identified as a leading figure of socialist realism, a protagonist of Italian neorealist painting who expressed himself in the artists of the Fronte Nuovo delle Arti, senator from 1976 to 1983. His art, linked to expressionism, was also characterized by a strong social commitment, which also led him to entering politics as a senator of the Italian Communist Party for two legislatures, during the secretaryship of Enrico Berlinguer.
