The Wedding, 1994

28x33 cm approx.

Sandy Skoglund (Quincy, 11 September 1946) is an American artist, photographer and installation artist; she lives and works in New York.

Skoglund studied art (sculpture, photography, film) at the University of Iowa and art history at the Sorbonne.

Her first known work is Radioactive Cats from 1980, a monochromatic gray room inhabited by a immobile elderly couple and a large number of green cats. Since then Skoglund has been making environmental installations using everyday objects, small sculptures and materials she designed and manufactured. She creates surreal and obsessive dimensions in which uniform and unreal colors dominate, which she then photographs, making them even more chilling through the flattening of the light / shade relationships during shooting and the exploitation of the bright colors of the large cibachrome on aluminum. She produces about one image per year, paying meticulous attention to very single detail. Each installation is built with different techniques and has an individual meaning, independent of the final photographic realization, which however becomes the only exhibition object by virtue of the common notions about photography as a reproductive medium, representing the artificiality of the contemporary world.
