Original Lithograph, 1946, in sanguine, on Lana paper, unsigned as normal , framed with an original pattern linocut from the same publication. Size: 340mm x 262mm (Paper size). In very good condition. This is provided in the same frame with an original woodcut made for the same series. This is a lithograph from the work “Visages”. Which was published in 1946 containing 14 Original Unsigned and Unnumbered lithographs together with some original Linocuts in pattern form. Matisse made a number of Lithographs to aid to an suction to benefit the evacuated children of the Maritime Alps. The idea was hatched to make these into a separate book which would alternate email portraits with texts. The poet Pierre Reverdy was asked to write the poems to go with the work and readily agreed. The finished work was a magnificent series of the rendering of Matisse’s portraits of women - at times animated, at times, conversational and at times solemn.
