Steve McQueen vide per la prima volta la sua Jaguar XK-SS parcheggiata in un parcheggio di Sunset Boulevard, quando apparteneva originariamente a Bill Leyden (un personaggio radiofonico/televisivo locale di Los Angeles).

Acquistò da lui il Jag per $ 5.000 nel 1958 - anche se alcuni storici affermano che il prezzo di acquisto era di $ 4.000.La moglie Neile ha ricordato:  "So esattamente quanto abbiamo pagato per questo, ho firmato l'assegno."

Una volta, McQueen fu fermato per eccesso di velocità con Neile, incinta di 6 mesi, seduta accanto a lui. Mentì e disse al poliziotto che era in travaglio. Ottennero una scorta ufficiale della polizia in ospedale, dove gli infermieri stavano aspettando di far entrare Neile. Quando la polizia andò via, McQueen disse al personale che era solo un "falso allarme", e se ne andarono.

In seguito disse: “Neile era incazzata. Non mi ha parlato per il resto della giornata. Ma, per Dio, ha funzionato. Non ho avuto la multa!"
