The Operation Smile Italia Onlus Foundation was founded in Italy in 2000 by volunteer doctors, nurses and healthcare professionals. They have been an active part of Operation Smile's humanitarian missions to operate on severe Cranio-maxillofacial deformities like harelips, cleft plates, severe burns and traumas. Since 1982 when Operation Smile was founded in the USA, it has changed the lives of thousands of children with over 240,000 surgical operations done by over 5,400 volunteers from 80 different countries, including Italy. Among the main objectives of Operation Smile is the promotion and development of medical self-sufficiency in the countries where the NPO operates in order to ensure free access to specialist healthcare to every child. Today, Operation Smile has treatment centers in several countries. In 2011, they started their activities in Milan at the Smile House - the first treatment center of Operation Smile in Europe - opened thanks to an MoU deal with the Hospital San Paolo where it is hosted.
