The “Center for Autoimmune Liver Diseases” is a tertiary referral center and one of the largest center for autoimmune liver disease internationally with a very active program of basic and clinical research in autoimmune liver diseases (ALD) based on the availability of a wealth of clinical material. Currently more than 1000 Italian patients with ALD, such as primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC), primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC), autoimmune hepatitis (AIH), and their dreadful complication cholangiocarcinoma are followed at the “Center”. The “Center” was recently accreditated as one of the Italian Collaborative Centers of the European Reference Network on the rare liver diseases such as ALD. Is part of the Division of Gastroenterology of the School of Medicine at San Gerardo Hospital in Monza, University of Milan Bicocca, and was created to coordinate the activities of prevention, diagnosis and treatment of these diseases through a multidisciplinary team consisting of internists, hepatologists, gastroenterologists, clinical immunologists, radiologists, pathologists and surgeons. The goal is to provide the patient with a full course of treatment, diagnosis and therapy.The team is committed to understand the etiopathogenetic aspects of ALD, with particular attention for the development of novel diagnostic and prognostic markers, understanding their genetic and epigenetic architecture, and development of novel therapies. Finally, an epidemiological observatory was open to monitor the prevalence and incidence of ALD in Italy and the rest of the world.
