"The Cal": the 1994 Pirelli Calendar with a personalised dedication from Alberto Pirelli!

This auction is for one of the original Limited Edition 1994 Pirelli Calendars: you can not buy it and it is given to only a limited number of important Pirelli customers and VIPs. For this reason, it is a precious heirloom, characterized by images of a certain charm.

The calendar is an original and is in excellent condition.

Alberto Pirelli, the great-grandson of Giovanni Battista Pirelli (the founder of the Group), will sign the calendar with a personalized dedication for the winner of the auction.

The 1994 Pirelli Calendar is characterized by two main things: the return of Derek Forsyth as art director, and the fact that the calendar is dedicated to both men and women. In fact, the title of this edition is "In Praise of Women". Preparation for the project required six months of work, because Forsyth wanted his return to be a big success. More than ten of the most celebrated photographers in the world were contacted, and eventually Herb Ritts was chosen. Ritts is a Los Angeles based photographer whose work is characterized by a very individual and recognizable style, but also the ability to give his pictures a sense of "class". The theme of the calendar was not defined in a precise way: the intention was to bring out the cool and casual feminine style of the 90's, without following the constraints of the fashion then. Ritts wanted to photograph the inner beauty of women, capturing the essence of the woman. The models are all exceptional: Cindy Crawford, one of the most famous faces in the world; Helena Christensen, a Norwegian who began her modeling career as a child; Karen Alexander, a model born in New Jersey who began her career in order to help her with her social work, and Kate Moss, the face of the 90's. The photography, after a lot of preparation, started in the Bahamas in May. The troupe was based on Paradise Island, but every day for six days, they visited the nearby Honeymoon Island, where the shooting took place. Honeymoon Island is a private island and was rented for the occasion. It gave the privacy, safety and light necessary to complete the project. The photos chosen for the calendar show the models in close-ups, half-length and full-length. The surrounding elements are minimal, because nothing should distract the viewer from the main subject: the woman. The calendar was presented to the press and to the public in the "Victoria and Albert Museum", home to one of the largest collections of art and design in the world.

The Cause

Nobel a Mogol (NaM), or Nobel to Mogol, is a nonprofit organization founded by three friends, Nanco Paoletti and journalists Milo Goj and Nestar Tosini. For years they have interpreted and studied the lyrics of the late, famous Italian singer Lucio Battisti, whose songs were written by Giulio Rapetti Mogol. Mogol has also written songs for many other Italian singers that have become great successes over the past 50 years: from Bobby Solo to Little Tony, Riccardo Cocciante and Adriano Celentano.

As they studied Mogol's songs, the three literati reached the conclusion that many of his texts were in all regards authentic poetry. If poetry means turning feelings, moods and states of being into words, then Mogol is certainly a great poet. Such verses as, "When sadness falls upon the depth of your heart, like the falling snow it make not a sound," leave nothing to be desired. They are right on par with even the most well-known and appreciated "traditional" poetry. He has written so many of such verses that a publication of them should be made.

Mogol is therefore a great poet whose works match up to those of other Nobel prize authors. The Nobel to Mogol Association aims precisely at persuading public opinion to create a movement to nominate Giulio Rapetti Mogol for the Nobel Prize in Literature.
